We Know Our Students

A Pillar of Support

At Hamden Hall, authentic teacher-student relationships are the cornerstone of our school community. Our Lower School teachers are trained in the Responsive Classroom approach that focuses on students’ social-emotional needs are being met, while also providing the framework for our youngest students to grow as people. In Grades 7-12, every student is paired with a dedicated advisor who provides essential guidance, advocacy, and support. This relationship ensures that each student feels seen and heard, allowing them to be empowered to achieve their best in all aspects of the Hamden Hall Experience. Our advisory system is integral to our community as it fosters a deep sense of belonging in our students.

Lower School: Nurturing Foundations

The Lower School at Hamden Hall is committed to a full, holistic education, by working in partnership with families, peers, teachers and the community. Each grade level uses positive conversation, class meetings, and cross-curricular activities to introduce our Core Values of Excellence, Support, Participation, Accountability, and Respect to our students. Using our Responsive Classroom approach, we cultivate an atmosphere of joyful learning and responsible independence in a safe environment that results in considerate and caring young people.

Every homeroom in our Lower School builds a strong personal connection between the teacher and students. From morning meetings to community-building activities, we create a positive learning environment that ensures higher student engagement and an overall well-rounded student experience.

Middle School: Cultivating Community

In Middle School, our advisory program is more “hands-on” and is designed to create a supportive environment and warm culture that feels unique to these grade levels. Each student is assigned an advisor who serves as the primary liaison between home and school, offering a comprehensive view of the student’s progress -- academically, socially, and even in their extracurricular activities. This holistic approach allows advisors to truly know each of their advisees while also ensuring that each student knows that there’s always someone looking after them too.

Our advisors meet with their advisees three times a week in small group settings, but their role extends far beyond these meetings. Advisor groups have lunch together at the beginning of the year (a great wave of relief for all new students in the middle school!) and engage in community service projects together. These activities build the strong support network that is the fabric of our close-knit community.

Additionally, Middle School advisors work collaboratively and meet weekly to discuss and address any issues their advisee may be experiencing. This full-team approach means that each student is receiving the support they need to navigate middle school with confidence.

Upper School: Guiding Students Through Their Academic Journey

In Upper School, the advisory program continues to play an important role in students’ lives as they embark on a more rigorous path. Each student is paired with an advisor for all four years of high school. With the bond created over the course of those years, advisors are better able to guide and support students. Should academic or personal challenges arise, our advisors are our first responders and work alongside teachers and parents to address any situation. Our Upper School students know that their advisory is just a short walk away from being able to help them. We understand that students who feel a sense of belonging and connection - especially in conjunction with key adults in their lives - engage more in the learning process both emotionally and academically. As such, our Hamden Hall advisors are intrinsically woven into the academic journey of each of their students.
