Conferring Over Human Rights

Twelve Upper School students recently attended the Amnesty International Regional Conference held at the Albany Law School in New York.

Accompanied by co-advisors Paul Gustafson and Chase du Pont, students attended seminars and workshops, including one on lobbying state and local officials on human rights issues, working for the release of human rights workers in Turkey, and developing the campaign How to Build an America that Welcomes Refugees.

Currently, Amnesty International Club members are working on writing letters to advocate for the protection of Rohingya refugees in Myanmar. Students have written to U.S. senators and representatives in support of bills before Congress that support humanitarian assistance and security for the refugees. Plans are also in the works to do some face-to-face lobbying with members of Connecticut’s congressional delegation, according to Mr. Gustafson.

In December, the group will hold its annual Write for Rights letter writing campaign. This is a global effort on behalf of a dozen individual human rights cases. Last year, Hamden Hall students and faculty wrote over 300 letters that were sent all over the world. For their efforts, Hamden Hall’s Amnesty International Club was awarded the Individuals At Risk Award, a commendation given to "local and student groups that go above and beyond" in one of Amnesty's "primary action areas."
