Life Lessons Digested During Young Alum Event

Young alums returned to campus last week and attended a typical Friday assembly followed by lunch – as was the norm when they were students on campus.

That said, the assembly they attended and the subsequent luncheon featured life lessons that could potentially translate well for them once back in their college dorms (and cafeterias!).

That’s because fellow alumnus Bun Lai, Class of 1988, also returned to campus Friday to speak at the Upper School Assembly. Bun showed his award-winning documentary, “Blind Sushi,” and then offered his thoughts on the “human appetite” and whether our planet can sustain the food choices we make.

“How we choose to eat is disruptive to the environment,” said Bun. “The human appetite has eaten away the woolly mammoth. Why not aim that appetite to organisms that are disruptive to the environment?”

To underpin that message, Bun brought sustainable sushi from his renowned New Haven restaurant, Miya’s, to a luncheon at Head of School Bob Izzo’s home following the assembly. Miya’s offers the world’s only invasive species menu, featuring dishes made of foraged ingredients that are threatening to the region’s indigenous species. Young alumni from the classes of 2016, 2015, 2014, and 2013 were treated to sushi made with wild catfish and other sustainable ingredients.

Amid bites of the succulent sushi, young alums chatted with one another and faculty members who were on hand to greet them. A raffle at the conclusion of the event ensured that several attendees went home with Hamden Hall alumni T-shirts.
