Eighth-Grade Debaters Earn Pins

Two Hamden Hall students placed seventh in the Connecticut Middle School Debate League Winter Tournament out of 61 teams.

Eighth-graders Prottoya Chowdhury and Samuel Judson earned pins for winning all three of their rounds at the tournament, which was held last month at the Middlebrook School in Wilton.

It was only the second time these two students participated in a Middle School debate tournament, and this was the highest rank of a Hamden Hall team in the two years the school has been participating in the Connecticut league (CTMSDL).

Also debating were eighth-graders Timi Afolalu, Yaco Pastor, and Parker Schultz; Afolalu and Schultz are both newcomers to debate.

“Debate is growing in popularity in Connecticut,” said coach Beth Richter, “and it’s a wonderful tool for students to learn the public speaking, argumentation, and teamwork skills that strong citizenship depends on.”

The purpose of CTMSDL is to enrich the education of Connecticut’s Middle School-aged students by providing opportunities for them to engage in informed debate competition. The final CTMSDL tournament of the season will take place at Eastern Middle School in Greenwich on April 22.

“Hamden Hall looks forward to a strong finish to their first year in the league, and to providing several new debaters for Hamden Hall’s Upper School debate team next year,” said Ms. Richter.
