Turn Up the Volume, Hold the Mass, and Make Measurements Fun

The Lower School Science classroom buzzed with enthusiasm and curiosity as third-grade students explored different ways of measuring the mass and volume of things around them.

In class with science teacher Emily Davies, the students have been studying the physical properties of matter, specifically the three states of matter: solid, liquid, and gas. Additionally, they learned about mass, volume, and density.

The students applied their knowledge to a fun, hands-on activity. Using a few different apparatuses including a scale, they weighed air and measured the volume of tiny rocks and large table tops. Most interestingly, they realized that the density of an orange is comparatively different when it is peeled versus not peeled.

"The students really have so much fun with all the hands-on learning," said Mrs. Davies.
