Happy Birthday to Tom Geirin, Hamden Class of 1951, who turned 83 on Christmas Day, 2016. Tom shared the fun photo with his celebratory cake, along with a nice note about the 2016 Hamden Hall Magazine. “I want all of you to know how much the alumni enjoy our ‘window’ on the world as it is today at Hamden Hall Country Day School. Also, the In Memoriam tribute to Ernie Russ was nicely done and great to have. He was a chemistry teacher when I knew him in the 1950s in his new lab building. As the years passed, I became a witness to the remarkable Ernie Russ working for Hamden Hall in so many different ways and jobs to assist others in whatever way that he could lend a helping hand. A field was named after him. A school mascot was named after him. Hamden Hall was his home and his life. Ernie Russ is a legend at Hamden Hall.” Tom added that he keeps in touch with his 1951 Hamden Hall classmate Willy Mehring. “Willy and his son visited me at my summer home in 2016 in North Truro, Cape Cod. We meet there every year.On Dec. 25, 2016, I celebrated my 83rd birthday. My overall health is good. However, several years ago I had a stroke with the loss of my speech, left arm and leg. The stroke was on a Monday of the week that I had been scheduled for a carotid artery operation. I did have that operation Tuesday morning. Recovering in ICU on Thursday of that week, my speech and the use of my left arm and leg returned except for a walking balance problem. Now, I use a three-wheel walker and am able to go almost everywhere with it.” Again, belated Happy Birthday wishes to Tom and thanks for your kinds words about Ernie Russ and Hamden Hall.
