Water Contamination Discussed with Science Classes

A Yale epidemiologist’s presentation to eighth-grade science classes enhanced the lesson plan by putting in perspective students’ recent studies of chemical and biological water contamination.

Dr. Arnau Casanovas Massana (who is the husband of Middle School world language teacher Nuria Mateos), visited with all four sections of eighth-grade science. His dynamic presentation about the effects of water contamination on public health made relevant the students’ classroom discussions and activities.

“He talked with students about the challenges and rewards of collecting and analyzing field data related to his area of specialty, the bacterial disease leptospirosis, and its transmission in the favelas of Brazil,” explained science teacher Beth Richter.

Dr. Casanovas Massana, who is a Postdoctoral Associate in Epidemiology at the Yale School of Public Health, also offered students the opportunity to handle typical lab equipment used for growing and transporting bacterial cultures, according to Ms. Richter.
