Bathroom Brigade to the Rescue!

From soap (one family donated 200 bars!) to toothbrushes, Lower School students embarked on a “Bathroom Brigade” for their final community service project of the year.

The toiletries, of which more than 500 individual items were collected, will benefit the town of Hamden’s Keefe Community Center. According to Keefe program manager Sharon Jones, toiletries such as toothpaste (we collected 40 tubes!), toilet paper (we collected 44 rolls!) are expensive and thus much needed.

“The toiletries collected by Hamden Hall students are everyday items needed for personal hygiene. These items are costly for the population we support, and cannot be purchased with government assistance funds,” said Sharon, who also attended the kick-off Lower School Assembly for the drive.

As a call to action for their fellow students, Hamden Hall kindergartners took to the stage at an assembly in May and performed a commercial highlighting via song and posters some of the needed toiletry items.

“We try to choose a theme that kids can relate to so they can make a personal connection with others who are in need,” Lower School Director Lorri Carroll Carroll said. “Over the years, we have collected soup, cereal, diapers and other baby items. This year it’s those basics that we all take for granted.”

The Bathroom Brigade toiletry drive is the Lower School’s final community service project for the school year. Other charitable undertakings this year included collections of socks, books, toys, and food as well as pop tabs for the Ronald McDonald House.

This is the fourth year the school has supported a collection drive in May, according to Mrs. Carroll. Besides soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and toilet paper, students also contributed 26 bottles of shampoo and conditioner, 11 cans of shaving cream and razors, seven boxes of Band-Aids, and 20 miscellaneous items.

“Since food banks are mostly supported during the holiday season, springtime supplies get really low. Each year, I call Sharon at the Keefe Center and ask for what is most needed,” she explained.
