Inside the Classroom: What’s Happening in Grade 9
Grade 9 is the year of exploration, discovery, and transition to the Upper School. Students have the opportunity to engage in exceptional academic class offerings such as Biology, English, Ancient Medieval History, Math and Language placement classes, and test prep programs.

An array of clubs and activities are offered with a two sport requirement. Leadership prospects arise with Student Government involvement while artistic students can throw in our Pottery Studio, hone their musical talents in the Choir, Instrumental and Ensemble bands, or explore character acting in Theatre productions.

Ninth-grade students have access to dedicated student leaders and mentors through the Princeton Peer Leadership Program, and appointed faculty advisors help make a seamless first-year passage or continuous success under the pines.
Ninth-graders embark on a year-long orientation through the Princeton Peer Leadership program. Groups of students are matched with two designated peer leaders who serve as mentors. Every Thursday, each group gathers for a weekly meeting and have open discussions on topics such as academic pressure, teen issues, social media, and current events.
Students have the opportunity to serve as class officers in the Student Government Council. Meeting once a week with the Class Dean, students work as liaisons between their classmates and faculty. The council plans activities throughout the year, such as wellness events, community service projects, fundraisers, and more.
Under the advisement of the College Counseling office, students have the advantage of taking rigorous test prep classes to help familiarize themselves with the PSAT/SAT testing structure. Mock assessments help build critical thinking, problem-solving, and math skills that aid the student in academic advantages for college.
As members of the Fairchester Athletic Association and the Connecticut Independent School Athletic Conference, our athletics program offers 20 different team options for the fall, winter, and spring seasons. Practices are held after school at our Skiff Street Athletic Complex, Beckerman Athletic Center, or Taylor Gymnasium. Teams compete against peer schools in their divisions.
As part of the continuous academic structure, students partake in both core classes, including the biology curriculum, which enables students to explore and understand the material through hands-on research. Activities with labs on specific subjects including blood typing. Specialized disciplines include our Signature Program opportunities -- the MakerSpace Design Lab, Science, Innovation & Design, and the Global Online Academy.

The value of the visual and performing arts is integrated in the curriculum. Students have the opportunity to express and display their musical talent in our Upper School Chorus, Concert Orchestra, or Jazz Ensemble. Independent study art students curate student artwork for exhibition in our Moira Fitzsimmons Arons Art Gallery, while thespians work as performers or backstage crew to create dynamic theatre productions in the winter and spring.
