Latin teacher Stephanie Spaulding embarked on a three-week tour of Israel and Jordan over the summer through her involvement with North American Cambridge Classic Project.
“What a privilege to have the opportunity to walk in ancient footsteps this summer with the support of the Christine Fernald Sleeper Travel Award,” said Stephanie. “I returned a changed teacher with a new understanding of this complicated part of the Roman Empire. Because of this, the best I can do is encourage you to travel to this part of the Greco-Roman world to see it for yourself.”
Stephanie noted that Book IV, Stage 29 from Cambridge Latin Course was her first introduction to the world of Rome in the province of Judea. Her traveling companion was her husband, Henry, and the trip began in Tel Aviv. They headed north along the Mediterranean, making Haifa home base for exploring sites on the coast, including Apollonia, Caesarea Maritima, and the prehistoric Nahal Me’arot.
Other travel highlights included exploring the Golan and Galilee regions in Nazareth to visit the Decapolis cities of Scythopolis and Hippos, a drive through various National Parks, stopping at Qumran, the discovery locale of the Dead Sea Scrolls with a tour of a graffiti park on the banks of the Dead Sea, and a full day visit to Masada. Stephanie noted that the view in person was awe-inspiring.
The final leg of the tour incorporated two side trips from Jerusalem with a day journey to the West Bank and a three-day trip to Jordan to visit Petra. Jerusalem was the last visit where Stephanie and Henry scheduled a private guided tour and visit to the Israel Museum to immerse themselves in the history and sights.
The North American Cambridge Classics Project is a non-profit organization that works to promote the study of classics and support Latin teachers in teaching the course. This year marks Stephanie’s 20th anniversary with the organization.
