Class of 1974 alumna Beth Lapides continuously fulfills her creative spirit with an innovative approach as a writer, author, comedian, performer, and most recently the founder of the coaching program, The Infinite Creator.
The Infinite Creator is a transformational program for creatives in fields as diverse as TV writing, creative nonfiction, stand-up, podcasting, painting, and music. Beth works with clients in one-on-one sessions and workshops to streamline their ideas into projects and beyond.
“I've dedicated my career to the art of storytelling and creative expression,“ said Beth, “With The Infinite Creator, I leverage my extensive experience in the creative industry to coach writers, performers, speakers, and multi-hyphenates, helping them transform their ideas into tangible projects and to get those projects successfully out into the marketplace.”
From an early age, Beth was always creating and that imaginative essence followed her to Hamden Hall where she was involved with dance, film club, and writing for the literary magazine FACES. After graduation, Beth attended Brown University where she graduated with a degree in Modes of Expression, an independent major of her choosing. Beth moved to New York and then Los Angeles, Calif., developing, performing, and touring in solo shows that blended visual arts and comedy.
As her career progressed in the 1980s and 1990s, Beth created the revolutionary UnCabaret, an alternative comedy company that allowed fellow comedians to showcase their material outside of the traditional comedy venues. Beth noted that what set her company apart is that she would talk back to new comedians while they were on stage to create a more conversational and relaxed style. UnCabaret has spanned over 25 years with live television specials on Comedy Central and a four-episode series on Amazon.
Aside from comedy and performing, Beth is a published author with the release of her book, Did I Wake You?: Haikus for Modern Living, in 2007 and the audiobook So You Need to Decide in 2022. She has appeared on various television programs including Sex and the City and the Today Show; radio and podcasts including NPR, Lovett or Leave It!, and Alison Rosen Is Your New Best Friend; and in O, The Oprah Magazine and People magazine.
Most recently, Beth performed her new solo show, It's A Lot, in November. At the heart the show is her own story of rebirth. The show features a mix of comedy, personal stories, original music, and thought-provoking commentary that takes a deep dive into what it means to transform into the “new me” in this rapidly evolving world.
When asked about advice about fostering creativity, Beth advises all students at Hamden Hall (and all alumni) to “always be creating” and "never give up."
“Being creative means to grow,” said Beth. “To grow, you need to be strong and flexible. There’s no one right path. No corporate ladder. You need to adapt to the times, while staying true to your own voice.”
