John M. Garfield, Former Faculty and Past Parent

John M. Garfield, of Hanover, N.H., died on September 21. He is the husband of Sylvia Garfield. His son, Andrew Garfield, is a Hamden Hall alumnus, Class of 1982.

John began teaching at Hamden Hall in 1971 and retired in 2004. During his 30-plus years at Hamden Hall, as a history teacher and Director of Studies, John formed many strong connections with colleagues and students. He was also the President of the Cum Laude Society, which was founded in 1974. John was known for expecting the very best from his students, his calming demeanor, and ability to command attention when teaching history in classrooms.

There is no obituary available at this time. An informal memorial will be held for John in Spring/Summer 2025.

The Hamden Hall community extends condolences to Sylvia, Andrew, Rob, and the Garfield family during this difficult time.
