Having established a new Girls’ Ice Hockey program during the 2024-2025 school year, Hamden Hall is proud to announce the hiring of former professional hockey player Sean Donohue to head up the new athletics offering.
Coach Donohue is a Hamden native and dedicated hockey professional with years of both playing and coaching experience. His passion for the game, which started in Hamden youth programs and continued at the high school level at Notre Dame High School - West Haven and New Hampton Prep School, led him to Saint Anselm College and beyond as he ventured into a professional career. He was a player for the minor league team, Knoxville Cherokees, in the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL).
Following his playing career, Coach Donohue moved into coaching working at Choate Rosemary Hall, North Haven High School, Notre Dame High School - West Haven, Hamden High School, and now Hamden Hall. In addition to coaching, Coach Donohue was a high school and college official. Currently, he is the owner of Donohue Hockey Skills.
"We are extremely excited to bring Sean in as our Girls’ Head Ice Hockey Coach as he brings a wealth of experience and a strong understanding of the ice hockey landscape in Connecticut,” said Director of Athletics David Doyle. “We are committed to elevating each of our varsity programs at Hamden Hall, and we feel Sean brings the right skill set. I’m excited for Sean and our Girls Ice Hockey program, and I look forward to working with him as we look to grow our program over the next few years.”
Head of School Bob Izzo is equally excited to be bringing Coach Donohue on board. “Sean has been a friend of mine for more than two decades, and we are lucky to have him join our coaching staff. In addition to being a person of high character, he is a terrific hockey coach and a wonderful mentor of young people,” said Mr. Izzo.
Coach Donohue noted that while it is both exciting and challenging to be starting the Girls’ Ice Hockey program, he is thrilled with the opportunity to work with the student-athletes at Hamden Hall.
“My focus will be on the girls having fun and working hard as athletes. If we do both of these things, winning will certainly follow,” he said. “The main objective is to make friendships for the rest of your life and hopefully learn some lessons on the ice that you can carry on in life.”
