Dr. Lisa Hill Appointed Director of Inclusion, Equity and Diversity

A Special Announcement from Head of School Bob Izzo:

I am pleased to announce that Dr. Lisa Hill has been appointed Hamden Hall’s Director of Inclusion, Equity and Diversity.

In this new post, Dr. Hill will help promote and enhance a campus-wide understanding of ethnic identities and cultures while working in conjunction with administration, faculty, current and past families, and alumni. Her overall efforts will be an integral component of campus life and will serve to create an inclusive environment that supports and affirms all members of the Hamden Hall community.

As the current chair of the History Department, Dr. Hill brings a broad knowledge base of those cultures and mindsets that historically have been marginalized. While Hamden Hall has had a Diversity Committee since 2006, it is nonetheless time to provide a more sustained, concerted effort in addressing the needs and perspectives of all members of our school community. We are one united community, but we are also diverse in our self-identities and cultural experiences.

Dr. Hill is a brilliant educator and is highly respected by her colleagues and students. While her new position will reduce her classroom teaching, Dr. Hill will work to continue to ensure that our students have a voice as well as a safe, creative space to thrive and succeed.

Now entering her fourth year under the pines, Dr. Hill came to us from Tuskegee University where she served as both interim dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and chair of the History and Political Science Dept. Dr. Hill started teaching in 1991 as a graduate student at Emory University. She has also taught at the University of Maryland, George Mason University, American University, and Bowie State University, where she chaired the Women’s Studies Program.

Dr. Hill earned her doctorate in American and African American History from Emory University as well as two master’s from the school – the first in African American Literature and the second in American History. She earned her bachelor’s in American Studies from the University of Maryland.

A published author, Dr. Hill has written two books – with a third due out at the end of this summer – and has had articles printed in seven publications. She is also an exam leader for the AP U.S. History test and is the advisor to Hamden Hall’s chapter of the Rho Kappa National Honor Society.

In speaking with Dr. Hill regarding the new position, she noted that with the recent calls for change both domestically and globally, our school community would be remiss if we did not heed the call ourselves. Hamden Hall takes great pride in its leadership role in the Greater New Haven community and beyond, and this appointment allows the school to be in the forefront of these crucial issues rather than in a reactionary position.

I am excited to work with Dr. Hill and look forward to enhancing programming, activities, and events to better serve every member of our school community.
