Black Student Union Makes Its Voice Heard Via Black History Month Video

The Black Student Union is Hamden Hall's newest club, and despite its recent formation, was already able to pull off a major undertaking: the creation of a video that was presented during an assembly last week in celebration of Black History Month.

Club President Alexandra Blaise said the affinity group's overarching mission is "to have a safe and communal space on campus."

"As a group, we discuss ways in which we can make Hamden Hall a more inclusive and thriving environment for all students," she said. "My motivation for creating this club was to provide Black students at Hamden Hall with an opportunity to foster a sense of belonging at their school."

The club's first initiative was to organize a Black History Month presentation highlighting Black Americans and their impact on history. All 13 members of the club helped research and assemble content for the video.

"We also wanted to share important historical events, past and current, in hopes of providing the Hamden Hall community a glimpse into the experiences endured by our ancestors as well as the lives of today's Black community," said Alex.

Next up for the club will be an April open forum event with a panel comprised of current students and alumni from the Black community. "We want people to be able to see our point of view of being at Hamden Hall," said Alex.

Black Student Union advisors include Dr. Lisa Hill, Krysi Crimley, and Dr. TD Tucker.
