MayFest 2024 Brings Together Art, Music, Creativity, and Community

From live music performances and entertainment to athletic games, arts-and-crafts, and delicious foods, the lawn of the Davis Street Campus was humming with activity as the Upper School community enjoyed a leisurely Friday afternoon at the annual MayFest celebration.

The festival dates back to 2013 where it began as a two-day celebration at the Beckerman Athletic Center showcasing the creative and musical talents of students and faculty. MayFest moved to the Davis Street Campus in 2021.

MayFest 2024 was organized by the efforts of seniors Micah Mfuko and Darwin Sasso as part of their May project submission along with Upper School Dean of Students John Greenawalt and faculty member Charlie Alexander.

As the festival emcees, Micah and Darwin welcomed students and faculty to kick off the musical performances on the main stage. Seniors Eric He and Will Christman on the guitar and drums respectively performed the song Stick Season by artist Noah Kahan followed by a piano piece by sophomore Alexander Yi. Senior Rose Wei performed a traditional Chinese opera selection as senior Casey Armstrong and sophomore Mae McDonnell sang For Good from the musical Wicked.

Upper School students and faculty had the opportunity to partake in a myriad of fun activities and games hosted by student-led clubs including a tie-dye T-shirt station sponsored by Pride Alliance, salsa lessons and piñatas with the Hispanic Student Union, DIY spray-painted sports bags with the Dance Club, traditional board games with the Chinese Culture Club, and a Spikeball tournament hosted by the Red Cross Club.

The artistic talents of the students were celebrated with an Open Studio Art Show organized by Arts Department Chair Caryn Azoff and senior Lillian Xue. The exhibit featured student artwork in the mediums of ceramics, drawing, digital photography, multimedia design, and painting. Students were also invited to a Theatrical Showcase hosted by the Thespian Society in the Taylor Performing Arts Center following the art show.

“Thank you to Mr. Greenawalt, Mr. Alexander, and all others involved in making MayFest such a success,” said Director of Upper School Kim Porto. “It was a great afternoon!”
