2012 Alumnus Unlocks Financial Insight

As a wealth planner, Class of 2012 alumnus Daniel Weiss works primarily with Americans living in Singapore, South East Asia, and Europe. He provides clients with comprehensive, cross-border financial advice with a focus on international taxation.

“No day is the same. On Monday I might analyze the tax effect of a client moving to Germany or South Korea, on Tuesday there might be a call with a Spanish CPA to discuss Madrid inheritance tax, and on Wednesday I might speak with a Singaporean about the implications of giving up a green-card and expatriating from the U.S.,” said Dan.

Dan’s interest in international financial planning grew from his father, Alan Weiss, who owned his own wealth management firm and was a financial planner. He got Dan interested in financial advising as a means to help people achieve their personal-financial goals.

“Personal finance is an essential knowledge area that is beneficial for everyone to have some competence in,” noted Dan. “It answers questions, like: How much cash should I keep in the bank? How much should I invest? What should I invest in? What tax-efficient strategies are available? What insurance do I need? What should my estate plan look like? Money is something we all use daily and will throughout our lives—understanding and developing a plan around it can provide tremendous value over the long term.”

Dan graduated from the University of Michigan in 2016 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Studies, concentrating in political economy and development and Spanish. He went on to obtain his Master’s degree in financial planning from the Edward S. Ageno School of Business at Golden Gate University. He is a certified financial planner professional and enrolled agent (IRS tax specialty).  After graduation, Dan spent two years in China and Vietnam and said he loved living in Asia. Currently, he lives in Singapore.

Every day, I get to solve complex puzzles and help people successfully navigate their personal-financial lives,” said Dan.
