Former NBA Pro Vin Baker to be Featured at Fourth Installment of Beckerman Lecture Series

Former NBA basketball standout Vin Baker will address the Hamden Hall community during an upcoming fourth offering in the Beckerman Lecture Series.

On Thursday, Feb. 19, at 7 p.m., Baker will present an inspirational message based on his own experiences personally and professionally. The former University of Hartford player – whose all-time leading scorer college record still holds today – was drafted in 1993 by the Milwaukee Bucks as the team’s power forward and center.

In 1997 he was traded to the Seattle SuperSonics, where he stayed until 2002. His career in the NBA also took him to the Boston Celtics, New York Knicks, Houston Rockets, and the Los Angeles Clippers until his retirement in 2006.

During his NBA stint, Baker racked up four appearances in the NBA All-Star game. He also competed for the United States in the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney.

Baker grew up in Old Saybrook, Conn., and was called “America’s Best-Kept Secret” by Sport Illustrated before accepting a scholarship offer from the University of Hartford. He continues to reside in Connecticut and is currently working on his Master of Divinity degree at Union Theological Seminary.

“The Beckerman Lecture series is designed to promote engaging conversations and surely Vin Baker’s extraordinary career in the NBA and his work now as a youth mentor and counselor will foster stimulating debate and discourse,” said Head of School Bob Izzo. “We look forward to Vin visiting our campus and sharing his motivational story with our school community.”

The Beckerman Lecture Series is sponsored by the Beckerman Family Foundation. In November, the series brought NPR radio host Faith Middleton to the Hamden Hall campus. Each lecture series promotes personalities, topics, and themes that have shaped our world and continue to impact our place in the global community.

The Vin Baker event is complimentary, but reservations are suggested as seating is limited. For more information or to reserve seats, call 203.752.2616 or email apesce@hamdenhall.org.
