Model U.N. Club Exercises Diplomacy at BosMUN Conference

In the first weekend of February, debates on global issues and high-level negotiations were taking place at Boston’s Marriott Copley Place as a team of 16 Upper School student delegates attended the Boston Invitational Model United Nations Conference hosted by Boston University students.

The three-day summit welcomed a plethora of high school students from around the country with Hamden Hall Model U.N. Club representatives including seniors Eric He, Josh Huy, Micah Mfuko, Kaylin Sweeney, Mathias Vieth; juniors Josh Aversa and De’ron Dickerson; sophomores Linda Chen, Barbara Ramirez-Moreno, Sophia Vash, Betty Wang, and Paula Wang; and freshmen Ben Greenberg, Zhanna Milan, Frida Ramirez-Moreno, and Freddy Xiang. The students were accompanied by faculty advisor Julie Sanza Calder.

As mock delegates, the students were each assigned a country and a committee with the task of debating global issues from the perspective of their assigned country. Committee designations included the General Assembly, Economic and Social Councils (ECOSOC), Crisis, and Specialized. To prepare for the conference, students did research on their assigned country’s stance on the issues that would be discussed in the committee sessions and wrote position papers describing their country’s beliefs and standpoints.

The conference began with an Opening Ceremony before the students broke off into their committee sessions, engaging in debates and creating proposals and resolutions for the designation issues they chose. Once the sessions ended for the day, the students enjoyed shopping and exploring restaurants in the two malls that are attached to the hotel.

Mrs. Sanza Calder noted that sophomore Sophia Vash won an award at the conference, and this honor marks the second award that the Model U.N. student delegation won this year. Senior Mathias Vieth won an award at the previous conference last November.
