Hamden Hall Selected For Pilot AP Course in African American Studies

Hamden Hall has been selected by the College Board as one of 60 schools to pilot a new course, AP African American Studies, with Director of Inclusion, Equity, and Diversity Dr. Lisa Hill serving on the oversight committee.

According to the College Board directors, Hamden Hall was chosen as one of the pilot schools because of its strong academic and AP offerings as well as our diverse student population.

“I am truly honored to be asked by AP/College Board to serve on the Course Development Committee for this program,” said Dr. Hill. “As part of the development team, I will be part of the structural process from the fine tuning to the unit arrangement to final roll out.”

In her new role on the Development Committee, Dr. Hill will virtually meet over the next few months with College Board facilitators and dozens of other experienced educators. Discussions will involve the course framework including the content, proper assessment questions, and the necessary professional learning tools and resources.

Starting in February, the team will commence the first phase of the process, which is to finalize the content outline and review and confirm the assessment items that represent the course. The team will work on building out a large collection of scholarly texts and primary sources such as visual, text-based, and data excerpts that will serve as the curriculum framework, said Dr. Hill.

“The vision for the pilot program is to offer a new educational course with a multidisciplinary approach to the key learning initiatives where students closely and consistently analyze authentic sources as they build their knowledge within the subject area,” noted Dr. Hill.

Dr. Hill was further honored to be a presenter on Martin Luther King Jr. Day at Albertus Magnus College. She hosted a presentation titled Community and Responsibility: The Impact of the Activism of Black Women Between Two Centuries on January 17.

The presentation outlined the obstacles, discriminative practices, other difficulties, and successes faced by black women during the 20th century. According to Dr. Hill, many of the topics discussed can serve as torches for activism, civic responsibility, and understanding in the current world.
