Middle School SID Program Welcomes Inquisitive Thinkers

Science is a field of study with many roads. All roads have one common thread - an inquisitive mind, which is a key foundation skill for a budding scientist. Middle School students now have the opportunity to think like young scientists and engineers with the expansion of the Hamden Hall Signature Program, Science, Innovation, & Design.

Under the direction of science teacher Paulomi Aldo, the Middle School Science, Innovation, & Design program allows students in Grades 7 and 8 the opportunity to develop individual research projects and explore their scientific interests in a more in-depth, hands-on approach.

Through this program, students will use the scientific method to complete observations, come up with hypotheses, and formulate a question that culminates in the design and execution of their own research. The program is open to all students with the overall goal of preparation for high school level courses while enhancing skills such as critical thinking, public speaking, and research and data analysis.

As part of the program, students have the opportunity to submit research projects to state-wide science fairs, but it is not required. This year, eight students had projects considered at the 75th Connecticut Science and Engineering Fair. Those students included seventh-grader Anna Aslan along with eighth-graders Samantha Diaz, Anderson De Graaf, Landon Sassu-Martin, Zhanna Milani, Frida Ramirez Moreno, Alessandra Sticca, and Cooper Zebrowski.

“The students have worked so hard this year, and I am always amazed at the scientific topics they are interested in researching further,” said Mrs. Aldo. “Having a record number of Middle School students submit projects for consideration not only highlights the value of the program, but showcases the talent and passion of our students in the subject of science.”
